Under the legendary Gond rulers, Garha-Mandla became a thriving, wealthy empire with Jabalpur (then known as Garha) as its military stronghold. Queen Rani Durgavati is celebrated throughout India as a symbol of martyrdom, valor, and water-conservation wisdom.

The Kalachuris made Jabalpur an international center of art and philosophy. The circular 64-Yogini temple at Bhedaghat remains a surviving marvel of their rock-cut mastery overlooking the Narmada.
